01

Choose the location before the collection

A windowsill can be an appealing place for an herb, but the available light matters more than the look. Iowa State University Extension identifies light as a common limitation for growing herbs indoors. Check the location and the needs of the herb before bringing it home.

02

Begin with one species

Starting with one plant gives you time to observe its routine. Iowa State advises growing each herb species in its own container because their preferred conditions can differ. Pick a container and growing setup appropriate to that species, including suitable drainage.

03

Check instead of guessing

Look up the watering guidance for the exact herb and check the potting mix before watering. Indoor conditions change with the season, the room, and the container. A reminder to inspect the plant is more useful than assuming it always needs water on a particular day.

04

Keep a simple growing note

Record where the plant sits and any care changes you make. Consult the herb’s growing guidance for harvesting and ongoing care. Once you understand that first pot, you can decide whether your space and routine have room for another. There is no need to build the whole collection at once.

ONE THING TO TAKE WITH YOU

One well-chosen pot is a good place to begin.
