01

Name the work the counter needs to do

List the routines that happen here: preparing breakfast, packing lunch, or making coffee. Choose one section to serve as your main workspace. Start with that specific area rather than trying to reorganize the entire kitchen at once.

02

Use frequency as a guide

Notice what you reach for every day and what has simply been sitting out. Move occasional items to a suitable storage spot when there is one. Keep appliance placement consistent with the manufacturer’s instructions, including any space and ventilation requirements.

03

Make the small items easy to return

A shallow tray can group the things used for one routine. Try the idea with a tray or plate you already own. If it becomes another place to pile unrelated objects, make the category smaller instead of buying a bigger container.

04

Check the system after a normal day

Use the kitchen as usual, then notice what did not return to its place. An awkward location may need changing. A useful system is one you can restore without thinking too hard about it, even when dinner and tomorrow’s plans are happening at the same time.

ONE THING TO TAKE WITH YOU

A counter earns its space by helping with the routines you repeat.
